Daar bezoekt hij de rijks-hbs en begint hij in 1900 zijn loopbaan in een boekhandel annex drukkerij in Sappemeer. Vervolgens is hij enige jaren als journalist werkzaam in de stad Groningen, en vervolgens als bedrijfsleider van een drukkerij in Wildervank.
